Why should you stand against the ecumenical monoculture? Part 4

The Ecumenical Monoculture is Exclusive Part 3
This is a continuation of the illustration laid forth in the previous post.
Catholicism
“[The Church] does not derive her certainty about all revealed truths from the holy Scriptures alone. Both Scripture and Tradition must be accepted and honored with equal sentiments of devotion and reverence’.” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, paragraph 82.) Within postmodernism there can be no certainty about truth; all truth is relative, situated, and constructed.
“The Pope enjoys, by divine institution, supreme, full, immediate, and universal power in the care of souls” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, paragraph 937)
‘For the Roman Pontiff, by reason of his office as Vicar of Christ, and as pastor of the entire Church has full, supreme, and universal power over the whole Church, a power which he can always exercise.” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, paragraph 882) The ecumenical monoculture cannot tolerate the absolute and universal power described within the two previous statements. Such absolute and universal statements are seen as intolerant and reprehensible by the monoculture. The ecumenical monoculture will not tolerate the Catholic Church.
Hinduism
Hinduism is one of the most inclusive religions in the world. While it is based upon the revealed knowledge of the Vedas, it embraces numerous religious traditions and is divided into several diverse sects. Despite its various sects one thing is true for all Hindus they believe that all humans are reincarnated until their good actions are so plentiful that they are released from the cycle of reincarnation and become apart of a universal spirit. With 98% of all Hindus, living on the Indian subcontinent it is unlikely that the ecumenical monoculture will ever oppose Hinduism. Postmodernists, however, should oppose the universal claim that all humanity is trapped in the cycle of reincarnation, because it makes a universal claim.
Islam
The Shahada, one of the five pillars of Islam, reads as follows: “La ilaha il Allah, Muhammad -ur-Rasool-Allah” (There is no true God except Allah and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.). The Shahada clearly places the Muslim truth claim in a position of superiority above all other truth claims and in his article, Shanafelt states that, “It is only when that faith is asserted as a superior form of truth beyond all others that others must object (1).” The monoculture views the exclusive claim made in the Shahada, and subsequently the Koran, as intolerant and the ecumenical monoculture will not tolerate Islam.
Judaism
Judaism is monotheistic and this will not be tolerated by the pantheistic ecumenical monoculture.

Why should you stand against the ecumenical monoculture? Part 3

The Ecumenical Monoculture is Exclusive Part 2
In my previous post (“The Ecumenical Monoculture is Exclusive Part 1”) I closed with the following statement: “Within the monoculture all faiths, all truth claims, and all gods are equally viable so long as they do not claim superiority over another faith, truth claim, or god. Do not be fooled by the false tolerance and false inclusivism offered by the ecumenical monoculture. Postmodernism is an exclusive truth claim that is not only in direct conflict with every other exclusive truth claim but itself as well.” I want to dissect the false tolerance and false inclusivism offered by the ecumenical monoculture so you can see it for what it really is, intolerant. The purpose of this is not to argue against intolerance. Postmodern thought, however, claims to be the supreme form of tolerance, in our age, and yet it is venomously intolerant. The exclusivity of the postmodern truth claim will be examined in two specific arenas; first through its intolerance of other exclusive truth claims and secondly through its inherent intolerance of self.
Postmodernism’s Intolerance of Other Exclusive Truth Claims
The ecumenical monoculture is a pantheistic culture which tolerates all gods whose existence fits within the postmodern truth claim. Meaning that “truth [about god] is a fabrication of the human mind; everyone determines their own reality[and god]; and therefore no one has the truth [about god].” Therefore, within the framework of situated knowledge, god is situated within the group, or individual, who(whom) constructed it. Within the ecumenical monoculture there can be no exclusive deity, THIS IS AN EXCLUSIVE CLAIM. This is the tolerant and inclusive claim that the ecumenical monoculture is making. In essence they are claiming that “You can worship and serve any god you choose as long as your god does not claim superiority over anyone elses god.” The ecumenical monoculture will not tolerate an exclusive deity. Within the ecumenical monoculture god is a mere construct of the human mind, you literally create your god. THIS IS AN EXCLUSIVE CLAIM. Any religion that claims exclusivity or claims to worship the single ultimate god cannot be tolerated by the monoculture. To quote the article by Shanafelt, “the limit of tolerance is intolerance (1).” The monoculture cannot tolerate an exclusive, supreme, or single god. I want to show you why postmodernism and the ecumenical monoculture should not tolerate any exclusive religion. The following posts on the exclusivity of the monoculture will deal with this issue.

Developing a Biblical Perspective of Bible Study

Below is an essay I submitted to Logos Bible Software in honor of National Bible week you could read it below or read it at the Logos dedicated link here.

Bible study must be saturated with prayer. “Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God” (I Corinthians 2:12). We have received the Holy Spirit so that we can understand Scripture, which God freely gave us. The natural man cannot understand these things because “they are they are spiritually discerned” (I Corinthians 2:14). “In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication” (Ephesians 6:16-18a). The sword of the spirit must be wielded “with all prayer and supplication.” One cannot properly understand the word of God except through “praying at all times in the spirit.” Bible study must begin with, persist in, and result in prayer only then can we properly understand scripture.

Bible study seeks God’s intended meaning. “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth” (II Timothy 2:15). Whether in the pulpit or in personal Bible study Scripture must be handled correctly. One who improperly handles God’s word is an unproved workman who has reason to be ashamed before God. We live in an age that has declared the death of the author, where what a text means to the reader is paramount, an age where men have accumulated “for themselves teachers to suit their own passions” (II Timothy 4:3). Fallible man has misused infallible Scripture to propagate false teachings that spread like cancer and cause many to make shipwreck of their faith. The author is not dead and meaning within a text, specifically scripture, is determined by the author and not the reader. Scripture is objectively true and its meaning never changes. Proper Bible study is study that seeks God’s original meaning.

Bible study requires diligence. “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth” (II Timothy 2:15). The study, and subsequently the proper handling, of God’s word requires your best effort. Understanding Scripture comes from the guiding of the Holy Spirit, through prayer, and yet it necessitates personal exertion. A workman approved by God, “who has no need to be ashamed,” who rightly handles the word of truth is one who engages in persistent and diligent Bible study.

Bible study results in obedience. “But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves” (James 1:22). Scripture exists to be done, not merely read. The Sovereign God of the universe has spoken and He demands your obedience. Bible study that does not result in obedience is self-deception and shows contempt for the riches of God’s kindness and patience which stores “up wrath for [you] on the day of wrath when God’s righteous judgment will be revealed” (Romans 2:4-5). Bible study that is saturated in prayer, and diligently seeks God’s intended meaning always results in obedience.

Time For A Change

Recently my posts have been quite long and I have decided to break them down even further so they are shorter, I hope this will make reading them less time consuming. My next several posts will continue to answer the question: why should you stand against the ecumenical monoculture? Specifically in dealing with the exclusive nature of the intolerant tolerance promoted by the ecumenical monoculture. I hope this is a welcomed change.
